Expiation for fasting

Expiation is required when the sanctity of fasting is violated intentionally without an excuse.

  • When is it obligatory?
  • The major expiation is required if one has sexual intercourse intentionally during the day in Ramadan.
  • As for breaking the fast by eating or drinking intentionally, it requires making up the day and repenting, and some schools of thought (such as the Maliki and Hanafi schools) also require expiation.
  • What is the duty? (in order)

Freeing a slave (currently unavailable).

Fasting for two consecutive months (if he is unable to do so, we move to the next step).

Feeding 60 poor people.

By paying the expiation for missed fasts, we deliver the expiation to those most in need among the families registered with the association, and we feed sixty poor people on behalf of the person who paid it.
